Letter to Parents Regarding Borough and Citywide Fairs

September 9, 2014

Dear 8th Grade Parents:

As this year opens, we hope you had a restful summer and wish you a wonderful and exciting year for your child.

This year will be a very busy year where decisions must be made regarding which High Schools you would like your children to attend.

In October the High School Applications will be distributed to all 8th grade students. Your child will have the opportunity to choose up to 12 High School choices. These applications must be filled out and signed both parents and students and returned to the guidance office.

The High School Application Process may be a bit overwhelming and therefore it is imperative that parents be involved in this process.

We are inviting and highly recommend that both you and your child attend the P.S/I.S 102 High School Information Night on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 5:30 in our cafeteria.

During this workshop we will discuss:

The High School Admissions process, which includes:
• Making the Right Choices for the High School experience,
• Program Types and Codes, Admissions Priorities
• Admission Methods and Timelines
• Specialized High Schools
• Filling Out The Application

High School Directory Books, which lists the High Schools in all the boroughs and their requirements for admission, will be distributed to all at this meeting. These directories are necessary for you to refer to in order to fill out the High School Application.

The Specialized High School Student Handbook will be distributed for those students and their families that are interested in the Specialized High Schools
(i.e. Stuyvesant HS, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College etc.), including Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

Please be advised that the Registration deadline for the Specialized High School Exam (SHSAT) and Auditions for La Guardia HS is October 9, 2013. Letters regarding registration will be distributed in the upcoming weeks.

A separate information session will be conducted for all 8th grade students. However, we recommend that students accompany their parents to the High School Information Night. All students attending our High School Information night must be accompanied by an adult.

A High School Timeline is included below for your knowledge. The counseling office will send out reminders and all information will be continuously distributed. Please mark your calendars with important High School information.
